Bottom Surgery
  Male to Female GRS/SRS

 

Vaginoplasty

 
  • 4 to 5 hours general anesthesia

     
  • 3 day hospital stay

 

  • Leave hospital with drains, Foley catheter, pain meds and prophylactic antibiotics
     
  • 2 weeks in local rest facility for initial healing, recuperation, and daily physician check-ups

 

Potential Complications:

 
  • Swelling/discoloration/bleeding/hematoma
  • Infection/abscess
  • Abnormal nerve sensations, anorgasmia
  • Necrosis of skin flaps or grafts
  • Abnormal patterns of urination
  • Vaginal stenosis
  • Urethral or rectal fistula
  • Poor cosmetic results: asymmetries,
    bad scars, etc.

 

Surgery Technique:

 
  • Orchiectomy, storage of scrotal skin
     
  • Preservation of portion of glans penis and conversion to clitoris
     
  • Removal of corpora cavernosa

 

  • Filet urethra & insert between urethral meatus and clitoris
     
  • Create vaginal canal & line with inverted penile flap and scrotal skin

 

 

Postoperative Care:
 
 
  • Remove urinary catheter, drains, and sutures
     
  • Remove vaginal packing in 1 week

     
  • Begin vaginal dilatations and douching
  • Rest, dressing changes and daily check-ups for 2 weeks
     
  • Exercise, strenuous physical activity, and return to work in 4 to 6 weeks
     
  • Sexual intercourse in 6 weeks

 

Goals of GRS:
 
  • Normal female genital appearance
  • Tissues sensate
  • Ability to have orgasm
  • Ability to have sexual intercourse
